7 Home Remedies for Upset Stomach

Constipation, indigestion, diarrhea, headache, nausea and scores of other conditions can upset your stomach. In fact even stress can upset the tummy. So what do you do to get out of the pain, misery and embarrassment?

First thing is don’t get tense, you know the stomach is upset and you have to do something about it. There are many options including visiting a doctor to trying out natural remedies.

You can choose one or more of the selection of the following home remedies to calm down your upset stomach.

1. Hot Compress to Get Relief from Upset Stomach

 

You don’t have to eat anything or stop eating other food item to cure your upset stomach. You can get good relief by placing a hot water bottle on your upset stomach for 15-30 minutes. The heat will improve blood circulation and pain will be relieved.

You can use commercially available heating pads for the same.

2. Yogurt to Calm your Upset Stomach

Plain simple white yogurt with live cultures is probiotic and improves the metabolism by improving good bacteria in the stomach to check trouble making bacteria. So go ahead at eat 250gm of yogurt not only to cure your upset stomach but also for improving your immunity. A daily consumption of 200-250gm of yogurt will achieve that goal.

You can also add double the quantity of water in yogurt and mix it well to make a diluted version of yogurt called buttermilk in many countries. Buttermilk is easy on digestion.

3. Ginger Tea for Upset Stomach due to Nausea

If your stomach is upset due to nausea, headache or vomiting then ginger tea will not only solve your nausea problem but will also ease your upset stomach. Ginger has natural inflammatory capabilities which help in pain relief.

You can either chew thin slices of ginger or make ginger tea. Take an inch size of ginger piece, cut it into small pieces and boil it in water to make tea. Let it simmer for 15 minutes. Strain and drink the tea.

4. Rice Tea with Mint to Stop stomach ache

Cook the rice as usual but with more water. Strain the water when rice is properly cooked. Take a glass of strained rice water and add 5-6 fresh cleaned and washed mint leaves. Simmer it for some more time and drink the tea by enjoying every sip.

In Middle East people drink just the mint tea to calm their stomach. It is part of daily routine for some people and they claim that their stomachs are never upset.

5. BRAT diet to Calm Upset Stomach

During nausea and diarrhea, a diet called BRAT is very helpful in recovery to normal fast. Banana, Rice, Applesauce and Toast (BRAT) is a low fiber high-binding food bland diet without salt or spices.

You may decide to restrict your diet for a couple of days to BRAT for stomach relief from nausea and diarrhea.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar Relieves Upset Stomach

Is your stomach upset due to indigestion then Apple Cider Vinegar will help you to give relief from it. Add one tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar to a glass of warm water. You can add a teaspoon of honey also. Stir it well and sip it slowly.

If you find it too acidic then add more warm water to dilute it.

7. Soda for Upset Stomach - Bad Can Be Good Sometimes

Soda helps some people to treat their nausea. Some people have found sports drinks also to relax their stomach. Try it out and see if it works for you.

Some stomach problems are early warning signs of a bigger underlying medical condition, so rule that out particularly if you have frequent stomach upsets.
