Anyone can suffer from gingivitis. Gingivitis is a common mild gum disease affecting more than 50% of the adult population . It is so mild in early stages that it's easy to ignore it and let it grow into full-blown gingivitis.
You will feel irritation, redness ,swelling and puffing of the gums due to infection. Bad breath, loose teeth, receding gums, and bleeding gums are all the other symptoms of gingivitis.
Smoking, use of tobacco, age, diabetes ill-fitted dentures, broken feelings, pregnancy and certain medications can cause gingivitis. But, the most common cause of gingivitis is lack of hygiene. Bad oral hygiene can destroy your teeth and gums. Gingivitis must be treated, otherwise it can lead to severe infections known as periodontitis and you may lose a tooth or many teeth.
1. Baking Soda
Baking soda is very popular and one of the best home remedies for gingivitis. It is useful because of its alkaline nature. It neutralizes acids in the mouth. This reduces the risk of gingivitis turning into tooth decay and gum disease.
You need to apply baking soda paste on your teeth and gums as under:
- Add a few drops of warm water in ⅓ of teaspoon of baking soda.
- Mix it well and keep adding drops of water until it becomes a thick paste
- Apply this paste to your gums and leave it there for a minute or two
Repeat the process 2-3 times a day and make it a new routine habit. This will not only get rid of gingivitis but will make your gums and teeth stronger
2. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is a very versatile plant for health benefits. It has got antifungal and antibacterial properties which makes it a really good remedy for tackling gingivitis. It also reduces pain by soothing teeth and gums. You can apply Aloe Vera gel directly on your affected gums and keep it there for 10 to 15 minutes. Gargle your mouth with salt water.
Do it 2-3 times a day.
3. Lemon juice
Lemon is also antibacterial as well as anti-inflammatory. Vitamin C in lemon helps to fight infections. You can use lemon in two different ways to get rid of gingivitis.
- Make a paste by adding little salt to 1/4 teaspoon of lemon juice and brush your teeth with this paste
- Add one teaspoon of lemon juice to a glass of warm water and gargle with it.
You can also add salt to the lemon water for more effective gargling.
4. Turmeric
Turmeric is a very powerful anti-inflammatory agent with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Its component curcumin is full of these properties. You can use turmeric paste as toothpaste and massage your gums.
- Add a few drops of water in 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric to make thick paste
- Massage the paste on your gums
- leave it there for 10 minutes and wash your mouth by gargling with salt water
5. Sage
Sage is one of the oldest remedies for gingivitis and other dental as well as health problems for centuries. If you can get a fresh sage leaf then fine, apply it directly. Otherwise, take dried sage powder and rub it on the infected area of gum. Sage has anti-inflammatory and cleansing properties. You can mix sage powder with salt in equal quantities to make it even more effective cleansing of gingivitis.
